Piksi Dust & Naoshi Magic Sink Kobe

Another inspired substitution by the manager sees a player score on his return from injury. This time it was Naoshi Nakamura's turn. His blast of clear air turbulence proving the difference between a Vissel side lacking the guile to earn a point, and a Grampus team that did no more than they had to.

Vissel vs Grampus lineup

This game got off to an inauspicious start, with both Vissel's Okubo and Tulio picking up early injuries that looked like seeing them get subbed early. However, both managed to play on for a few minutes and both eventually looked none the worse for wear. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of the pitch, which cut up easily from the opening minute.

Okubo was the first to look like making a quick return to the bench. One burst of speed to create space in midfield, saw him tweak a muscle and spend the next few minutes limping noticeably. However, as the half wore on he gradually started to move a bit more freely again. Tulio was hurt in a typically robust tackle, and was also feeling its effects for several minutes. Overall, Grampus had the better of the half, but tended to try and be too clever close to goal. Tamada having a chance midway through the half, but slicing his shot wide. At the other end, Isomura made a timely block as Vissel's Hideo Tanaka advanced into the danger area. Takagi was also forced to come-out quickly to smother a Yoshida effort. The best effort of the half however, fell to Tulio who was brilliantly setup by a deft Josh back heel, but hit his effort weakly at Tokushige.

Vissel came out looking the sharpr and more determined team in the second half. First Okubo shot wastefully wide and cutting inside to create a good opening. Ishibitsu then headed over from 6-yards with one of their best chances of the game. Their only other clearcut chance saw Okubo hit a tame effort from close range into the arms of a grateful Takagi. Meanwhile, Stojkovic had brought on Naoshi Nakamura for Isomura after 69 minutes, and the midfielder was soon settling into his alternating role of midfield terrier and support striker. It was s typical burst from midfield that saw him drive towards the Kobe goal, as the Vissel defence retreated, late in the half and unleash a wicked shot that left Tokushige floundering. Once again, Piksi had seen a player mark his return from injury with a goal. At this rate, Mu Kanazaki will owe us a hat-trick on his return.

Danilson on his way...

nagoyagrampus-s.gif
to Grampus.

As expected, Consadole Sapporo and Nagoya Grampus, are said to have agreed a transfer fee for the Columbian midfielder to make his move permanent. The Hochi Sports, reports (Japanese), and we can probably expect an official announcement on Monday.

This is in stark contrast to unfounded rumours of supposed interest from Germany. Admittedly, from a club with a track record of underhand dealings. While such a move was very unlikely, the rumour probably achieved its objective in pushing up the transfer fee.

Hanai Out for 4 Weeks

Dani Out for 3 Months

nagoyagrampus-s.gif
Grampus midfielder Danilson, training back home in Columba, carelessly broke a metatarsal in his right foot. He will be out for about three months. Looks like we will going with Naoshi and Yoshimura as our defensive midfield combo for a while. :-(

Shinta Joins Keita & Tomo at Vortis

tokushimavortis-s.gif
Young Nagoya midfielder Shinta Fukushima joins the ranks of former Grampus players in Tokushima. Jun Aoyama may have gone off to Urawa Reds, but his place in the squad has been taken by Fukushima. With Jungo Fujimoto joining the Grampus midfield this season, Shinta was going to find it hard to get regular playing time and this seems a good acquisition for the Naruto-based team.

Takeuchi Loaned Out to JEF

nagoyagrampus-s.gif
Grampus central defender come wing back, Akira Takeuchi, has been loaned out to JEF United for a year. This should give him a better chance of getting regular first team football, but also suggests that Tatsuya Arai (currently in Spain training with Real Sociedad) is seen as a reasonable option as backup for Tulio, Masu, and Chiyotanda.

Josh to Miss Asian Cup

nagoyagrampus-s.gif
As expected, Aussie striker Josh Kennedy is set to miss the upcoming Asian Cup meaning that Grampus will have no players there, apart from former starlets Maya Yoshida and Keisuke Honda. This should mean that we have a reasonably fresh squad when the J.League kicks of on March 5th (provided Tulio, Josh, and Dani all get over their knocks).

Keita Lands in Tokushima

To no-one's surprise, Sugimoto joins Tomohiro Tsuda at Tokushima Vortis for next year. Tsuda is still on loan, but Vortis will have a couple of rapid whirlpools for at least one season. Let's hope it is enough to sweep them into J1.

Dani to Miss Final Three Games

Colombian midfielder Danilson will miss the last few games of the season after tearing a hamstring in the game against Shonan on Saturday. He is expected to be out for a couple of weeks. The influential volanté will be missed, but veteran Keiji Yoshimura forms an effective twin terrier combination with Naoshi Nakamura and they will not give opponents much time to dwell on the ball.

While Danilson is a strong contender for MVP for the second half of the season, our official MVP (Tulio) may well make a return to action for this game.

Igor Out for Six Months

Grampus midfielder Igor Burzanovic, one of our heroes on Saturday, is expected to be out for six months. He pulled lame about 30 minutes into Saturday's contest, and has been diagnosed with ligament damage. He was hobbling around on crutches after the game, and seemed reasonably relaxed, chatting to Ardija's Matto and waving to the crowd.

He is very disappointed to be ruled out for so long, and we wish him a speedy rehabilitation.

Maya Impresses in VVV Victory

Maya Yoshida made his second appearance for VVV in their 4-1 win over Willem II on Friday. He only came on as a second half sub, but seems to have impressed in his brief appearance, earning the highest rating of the VVV players. (At least, I think that's what the ratings on the left of the Limburger site means. )

Maya Finally Makes VVV Debut

Former Grampus defender Maya Yoshida, transferred to VVV Venlo last year, finally makes his debut for the club. His debut was delayed by a broken foot suffered in training shortly after his transfer in January. He had been training with Nagoya Grampus over the summer, so he should soon be back to full match sharpness. Looks like he needs to get up to speed PDQ. :-)

10-Man Grampus Down Omiya

nagoyagrampus-s.gif

The J.League resumed yesterday, after a two month hiatus for the World Cup, and we carried on right where we left off. Josh Kennedy scoring the goal, and Igor Burzanovic looking out of sorts in midfield and heading for the showers after only 42 minutes. And of course, no Grampus win would be complete without some late heroics by Narazaki to preserve the clean sheet.

The Aussie striker proved he does not suffer from a Samson complex, after being shorn of his trademark blonde locks, by bagging the only goal of the contest. A diving header, under pressure, from a wicked cross by Tulio in the 76th minute. We had other chances to score early in the game, Josh seeing a header drift wide and Nakamura saw a god effort well saved by Kitano in the Omiya goal.

First Half

Nagoya got off to by far the batter start and soon had the home team on the back foot. A good pass from Abe to found Kanazaki running into space in the box, but the future Japan star failed to make the chance count. This was soon followed by another good ball out to Hayuma Tanaka and build up, but both Nakamura and Danilson hesitated when presented with space to shoot.

We eventually went close when a Kennedy glancing header was well-saved by Kitano in the Ardija goal. The Aussie was then prmptly fouled on edge of box for a dangerous-looking free kick. However, Igor Burzanovic blasted the effort straight into wall.

Meanwhile, Ardija were limited to lofted long balls over the top, without much accuracy, most looking pretty aimless and hopeful.

Less than a quarter of the game gone, and we were already looking comfortable and much the better team. However, at this point Burzanovic earned his first yellow card after clattering into Fujimoto. Nothing malicious but it was a clumsy challenge and he could not rally complain about the card.

Mu Kanazaki continued to look lively, and a break down left looked likely to result in danger for the home team, but a defender did well to stop him getting in a cross. Shortly after this, Josh Kennedy was released into space on the right edge of the box, but his angled shot across goal flashed inches wide.

Danilson was looking a bit more at home in the anchor role, and made one crucial block near the edge of box after tracking an Omiya build up and closing down as a player advanced to shoot. However, he also gifted Omiya their best chance of the half, being stripped of the ball in the centre circle, but the home team lacked the composure to take advantage.

Our best chance of the half came after Naoshi fired a shot at the keeper after being released into space by a deft pass from Magnum. The occasional Japan international should have done better with the effort, even though it forced a good save out of Kitano. Omiya's response? Raphael hit a tame shot at Narazaki after one of their rare good build ups. Narazaki was eventually forced to make a decent save, as he tipped an in-swinging shot over the bar.

The half drew to a close with us down to ten men, after another clumsy challenge saw Igor pick-up his second yellow of the day, a bit more dubious than the first, but neither the player or manager really protested.

Second Half

This was a much more even half, but Grampus still looked the more purposeful team despite being a man short. Omiya were a bit more deliberate in their build-up, but still too slow and failed to find a way through until the closing minutes when their one man advantage eventually began to show.

Columbian Danilson saw an early blast from 20 meters fly just over the bar. At the other end, Fuyaya scuffed a shot on the edge of box and the 'shot' was easily saved by Narazaki. The mercurial Magnum hit a dangerous ball into space behind the defence, but hit the pass just a bit too long for Abe to latch onto.

Kanazaki was released into space after good work in the centre circle by Kennedy, but again the youngster failed to make best use of the chance.
Nakamura then pounced on a rebound but his instant shot from 20 meters flashed the wrong side of the far post.

Omiya's Kanazawa saw a reasonable claim for a penalty waved away. True, Abe did not seem to make much contact, as the forward turned into his challenge, but it is the sort of challenge that can often result in a foul.

Shortly after this, Tulio won a challenge for a loose ball and whiped in a low cross into the heart of the Ardija box. Kennedy’s bravery and speed into the six yard area, saw him score with a diving header that gives Kitano no chance. We finally had the lead that our level of control warranted.

As the clock wound down, the home team finally started to look threatening. Narazaki punched a Watanabe effort from a sharp angle clear and Raphael blasted over from six yards with the goal at his mercy. Ishihara then saw a header from a corner flash just wide and Narazaki palmed over a Fukuya blast from point-blank range. The Japan keeper then punched another dangerous shot clear, before the referee finally called a halt to proceedings.

Next up, an enthralling clash at home against Shinji Ono's S-Pulse.

Grampus Lose Ground on Leaders

nagoyagrampus-s.gif
With both Keiji Tamada and Josh Kennedy missing, Nagoya were no match for the home team as they lost their game in hand. This was another dull performance, from what should be an attacking formation, time for Pixie to reassess his tactics, since without the lanky Aussie up front we look lost.

It was a shame we did not get to see Hikaru play, despite making it into the senior squad for the first time. Unlike Maki and Magnum, at least Kuba claims to understand his role in the manager's 4-3-3 system. Elsewhere, it was good to see Chiyotanda and Danilson get their first starts.

However, apart from the early games against Gamba and Frontale, we have not looked good this season. Let's hope some of the other players start to understand their roles in Stojkovic's system, or this could indeed be his final year in charge. (Hs is the last year of a 3-year contract.) That would be a shame since he has clearly taken the team in the right direction, but seems to have lost his inspirational effect, at least temporarily.

Honda Send CSKA into CL Quarters

Local (Osaka) lad Keisuke Honda seals another impressive performance for the Muscovites by scoring the decisive goal that took them through to the final eight. WHile his swerving free kick should probably have been saved, he ended this game with an assist and a gaol.

Japan and Australia Ease Past Asian Minnows

Japan had already qualified for next year's Asian Cup, eased past Bahrain 2-0 with an improved performance, but made hard work of turning their control into goals. They should really have won by a more comfortable margin.

The likes of Nakamura, Honda and Hasebe proving that the overseas players (even if Nakamura is now back at the Marinos) will be critical to Japan in the Summer. The question is, can the home-based players raise their game enough to make the squad, now that the J.League is set resume.

Honda Makes Bright Start in CL

Keisuke Honda had a decent game against Sevilla in the Champions League, but the home team could only manage a 1-1 draw. The Japan international showed that he can contribute at this level, demonstrating some typically deft touches along with some pot shots on goal. However, the Spaniards now hold the advantage in the tie having scored an away goal as well as earning a point.

Milos to play in ACL again (against Gamba)

Former Grampus defender, Milos Bajalica, is set to play in this year's ACL. He has joined Henan Construction F.C., who qualified for this year's ACL tournament by 'winning' the Chinese Super League. Bricking a couple of Gamba players would probably not go down too well in Japan. :-)
